JRR Tolkien book news, new Tolkien book publications in 2008 & Tolkien books reviews

Where 2007 was all about The Children of Hurin, 2008 was the year of variety and saw some very beautiful and interesting new Tolkien books. Of course the deluxe edition and reprinting of Tales from the Perilous Realm got a lot of attention. Alan Lee's art work was all over the place since it was used for this new edition and there was also printed a paperback version of his Lord of the Rings Sketchbook. One of the most interesting publications of 2008 was Tolkien on fairy-stories by Verlyn Flieger and Douglas A. Anderson - a book any serious Tolkien fan should read. I also very much enjoyed Tolkiens Oxford: Oxford through the eyes of Tolkien - a new book by R. Blackham and the excellent Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits by Dimitri Fimi. Also in 2008 we saw the publication of some high quality editions by Walking Tree Publishers.

Latest news on the deluxe edition of Tales from the Perilous Realm

It was my pleasure to find out, from David Brawn, that the Deluxe Edition will be limited to 2500 copies only and that it will match the other Deluxe Editions recently published. It will be released in December and will have a green color. The first 500 copies will be signed by Alan Lee and will be sold, probably from early November, through tolkien.co.uk. It will be just regular copies of the Deluxe Edition and will be sold at the normal…  Read article

This book, Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits, presents an exploration of the evolution of Tolkiens mythology within the framework of its cultural and historical context. Tolkiens Heroic Quest by Robert Rorabeck

This book, Tolkiens Heroic Quest, by US author Robert Rorabeck looks at the heroic fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien, looking at major works such as The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, and lesser-known books. Since Im unable to find any info on this title I give here a view on a Master Thesis by the same author on the same subject, expecting this book to be an update of his 2003 study.  Read article

Since yesterday they started shipping out the 2009 Tolkien Calendar. It focuses on The Silmarillion and features illustrations from the revised illustration edition by Ted Nasmith. While we celebrated The Silmarillion 30th anniversary last year, it is great to see it is now in the picture again. The Calendar looks great and will find a nice place on my wall. Time to remove the Children of Hurin Calendar of 2008 and hang up the new one.  Read article
