In de Ban van de Ring – Complete First Dutch Edition Set
J.R.R. Tolkien – Het Spectrum, 1956–1957 – First Editions, First Impressions
A particularly attractive and complete set of the first Dutch edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, published in three volumes by Het Spectrum in 1956 and 1957. Translated by Max Schuchart, this historic edition was the first complete translation of The Lord of the Rings into another language.
The set comprises:
Volume I: De Reisgenoten, published in 1956
Volume II: De Twee Torens, published in 1957
Volume III: De Terugkeer van de Koning, published in 1957
All three books are first impressions and retain their highly distinctive original dust jackets designed by Cees Kelfkens. Their colourful Eye and flame designs make these some of the most recognisable and desirable early international Tolkien dust jackets.

Condition:
A very attractive matching set. The original brown cloth bindings are clean and well preserved, with bright red spine labels, gilt lettering and gilt rules. The bindings are firm and the three volumes present exceptionally well together.
All three original dust jackets are present and retain their strong, vivid colours. They show the expected signs of age, including some toning, light rubbing and minor wear or small chips along the edges and spine extremities. The jacket flaps and reverse sides show age-related browning and occasional foxing. Each jacket is now housed in a removable transparent protective cover.
The contents are generally clean and well preserved. There is some scattered foxing, principally to the endpapers and other preliminary or final leaves. A former owner's name is written neatly on the front free endpaper of volumes I and III. The original folding maps are present and remain in good condition. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Complete first-impression sets retaining all three original Kelfkens dust jackets are considerably more difficult to find than unjacketed sets. This is a handsome and historically important example of the first translation of The Lord of the Rings and a highly desirable set for the serious Tolkien collector.
