The Silmarillion – First UK Edition, First Impression, 1977, in Dust Jacket

The true first impression of The Silmarillion, printed by William Clowes & Sons and presented in its original dust jacket.

The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
This copy is the 1st printing of the 1st export edition published in 1977 by Allen & Unwin.

In origin, The Silmarillion precedes even The Hobbit, and tells the story of the First Age of Tolkien's Middle-earth. Tolkien worked on it, changed it, and enlarged it throughout his life. It was edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher Tolkien, with assistance from Guy Gavriel Kay. The earliest drafts date back to 1917.

True first (export) edition, with unpriced dust jacket and all other correct first edition points: printed by William Clowes and Sons, uncorrected errors on pages 330 (lacks full stop after 'Feanor") and page 352 (italicized "and").

The book is in Near Fine condition, with no previous owner's name or other writing. The endpapers have areas of pale browning.
A very clean and bright dustjacket, with no fading or tanning.
Only the most minor of rubbing, shows no fading or soiling, the dustjacket is also in Fine condition.
Some minor white stains on the board and minor bumps to the top front board, else in near fine condition.
The dark blue topstain is slightly faded.

The map of Beleriand and the Lands to the North appears as a fold-out map, and is printed in black and red, no tears or marks noted.

Noted printing points:
Page 330 line 4 shows no period after Feanor.
Page 352 line 39 has an italicized "and" in 'Lord of Waters and King of the Sea'.
Making this the true first export edition.

A wonderful copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's lifetime work containing his account of the mythology of Middle-earth, edited by his son, Christopher Tolkien.
