Farmer Giles of Ham – J.R.R. Tolkien – First Edition, First Impression, 1949

Original George Allen & Unwin first impression in the scarce Pauline Baynes dust jacket

London: George Allen & Unwin, 1949. First edition, first impression.
The book is bound in the original pale orange boards, lettered and decorated in blue, with the dragon device on the upper board, blue top edge and patterned endpapers.

This copy retains its original unclipped dust jacket priced 6s net. The boards remain attractive with light shelf wear and gentle rubbing at the extremities.
The text block shows normal age-toning and some spotting, while the jacket has light handling wear and noticeable spotting to the verso, all visible in the photographs.

Pauline Baynes supplied the colour plates and the numerous line illustrations throughout.

A desirable first impression of Tolkien’s second major published work, complete with its evocative original Pauline Baynes dust jacket.

Digital photos available, inquire if interested.
