The Two Towers, Being the Second Part of the Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
This is the very scarce 1st impression of the 1st US Edition of the Two Towers, with the 1955 date on the title page, with it's original dustjacket.
Published in 1955 by Houghton Mifflin, from sheets printed in Great Britain, at the same time as the original UK 1st impression, then shipped over and bound in the US.
There are no previous owner names or any writing in this book. The endpapers are not foxed, and show only a slight amount of
The map at the rear is in excellent condition, no tears or extra folds. It does have the small red dot on the coastline of Umbar, which is a point for the 1st impression maps in the Fellowship and the Two Towers (both US & UK maps).
The dustjacket also has the stripe on the top and bottom of the front, one of the points for the 1st dustjacket. It also has the 'notch' in the R of the Towers, which is only found on the 1st dustjacket. It does not show the gap and cufflink points that are found on the 2nd & 3rd dustjacket. So this is indeed the very scarce (1 of 1000 printed) 1st US Two Towers dustjackets.
Some minor rubbing and chipping to the spine and fold areas of the dustjacket, as well as fading to the spine area. The front fold has split in the middle of the fold, but no loss involved. The top edge of the textblock is dusty and none of the original yellow topstain is visable. The dustjacket is a very good candidate for professional restoration, which would help the faults and appearance immensely.
The rear boards of the book show some evidence of moisture, with some transfer of the blue to the interior of the dustjacket.
Only the rear endpapers show a moisture line on the interior, not wrinkled or damaged in any way.
The hardest to find of any of the 1st impressions, either US or UK.
Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
