The Hobbit or There and Back Again.
Published by Allen & Unwin, this second impression published 1937, same year as 1st impression.
The exterior of this copy is soiled and shows some lifting to the cloth on the back fold area, very likely moisture damage.
The interior is clean without any writing or names, with some scattered foxing.
The frontispiece is clean and bright, with a water spot at the top fold area, approx 20 mm by 15 mm, does not encroach on the color frontispiece. The front decorative map endpaper in excellent shape, without any previous owners names or markings.
The rear map, shows the lifting from the boards, same area as fault on rear cloth. Not as bad as it sounds, but should be noted. Has the 4 color and 9 mono plates all in excellent condition.
The second impression is important for the addition of the 4 color illustrations by the author. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with four of tolkien's color illustrations. One of only 1877 copies of the original 2300 that survived the bombing of London in November 1940.
The exterior cloth also shows some wear to the corner tips, and some cracking and minor fraying at the spine tips, but no loss to speak of. Some light shelfwear, but in very good minus condition overall.
The text block is lightly foxed to the edges, with the binding still tight. Features Tolkiens orignal 'Mountains and Dragon' design stamped in blue on the boards and spine.
A very good looking copy, furnished with a facsimile of the original 2nd impression UK Dustjacket.
This copy is also supplied with a gilt stamped custom green cloth clamshell case to house and protect this highly collectable copy.
Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
