The Second impression published 1937, same year as 1st impression.
Decorative map endpapers lifted and reused as endpapers, with 4 color and 9 mono plates all in excellent condition. The second impression is important for the addition of the 4 color illustrations by the author. This is the 1st and only early UK edition published with tolkien's color illustrations.
One of only 1877 copies of the original 2300 that survived the bombing of London in November 1940.
This copy has been elegantly rebound in full Forest Green Morocco leather. Features Tolkiens orignal 'Mountains and Dragon' design gilt stamped on the boards and spine. Has no other writing or inscriptions. Pages are clean and bright, a few smudges. Original spine bound in the rear. All edges have been trimmed and gilded, with a black ribbon marker sewn in.
A beautiful copy. A matching full leather clamshell case is provided to protect and display this beautiful edition. The classic, original design, reproduced in full leather with gilt artwork, produced by a true craftsman, very likely the premier American binder, bar none.
