The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is coming and so are the new film tie-in publications (17.09.13 by Pieter Collier) - Comments

At least seven titles will be released by all major Tolkien publishing companies early November, in advance of the December 13 debut of the second Hobbit film, called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

They include, next to the usual calendars and diaries, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Visual Companion by Jude Fisher, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Official Movie Guide by Brian Sibley, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Ultimate Sticker Book, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Sticker Book, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: The Movie Storybook and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Activity Book.

The second epic instalment of Peter Jackson’s trilogy The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will see The Company of Thorin Oakenshield encounter even greater perils in their quest to claim their long-forgotten gold.

After setting out from the safety of Bag End, Bilbo Baggins has journeyed through Middle-earth with his fourteen companions, fighting through fire, Wargs, Goblins and even escaping the creature known simply as Gollum.

The second movie will bring us to the Lonely Mountain and straight to the dragon. The dwarves and the hobbits will face the desolation of Smaug. A lot of side stories will be created and yet another bunch of extra stories will be added to make the movie extra fun and spectacular. Once again we can expect a big movie with a lot of action and effects and of course the now very well known spectacular landscapes.

Case you missed it, some more about The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson came The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the first of three films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit. The second film, titled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released later this year in December. And the third and final film, which now takes on the title The Hobbit: There and Back Again has been rescheduled from July 18, 2014 to December 17, 2014. All three films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The screenplay for the second movie is still by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson and surprisingly also by Guillermo del Toro (how annoying must this be?). Sir Peter Jackson, who just received New Zealand's highest honour, is producing the film, together with Fran Walsh, Carolynne Cunningham and Zane Weiner. The executive producers are Callum Greene and Ken Kamins, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey and Martin Freeman remains playing the central role of Bilbo Baggins (although I prefer him as Watson). Also reprising their roles from The Lord of the Rings movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

The main cast includes (in alphabetical order) Benedict Cumberbatch, Cate Blanchett, Martin Freeman, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Manu Bennett, Hugo Weaving, Aidan Turner, Lee Pace, Thranduil Christopher Lee, Ian Holm and Andy Serkis.

With all the big names one would almost forget to mention that the movie is (supposed to be) based on a book called The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. And because I like books I thought it a nice idea to show some of the books that are being produced to coincide with the upcoming movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Some will be interesting reads, others are just books that belong in every good franchise.

There will be books for small and big, paperbacks and nice looking hardcover editions... yes their will be The Hobbit movie images all over the place (once again)! It will be a global publishing event long to remember.
