1st printing of
the booklet containing the Lecture given by JRR Tolkien for The Sir
Israel Gollancz memorial Lecture, british Academy 1936.
Laid paper
with 'Cassiobury' watermark, bound in grey wove wrappers, binding still
tight. Published six months before its appearance in vol. 22 of the
printed annual proceedings of the Academy. Housed in a protective black
clamshell box with gilt titles to spine. Wrappers have become slightly
soiled . Internally the pages are remarkably clean and undamaged. As in
Hammond and Anderson Bibliography A.2. A wonderful first published
edition of the lecture given by Prof Tolkien in November 1936, he
lectures on the poem Beowulf, specifically the monsters (Grendel and
the Dragon) and past critics of the work. A powerful and rare document
and one that makes you wish you were at the lecture itself. Please ask
for further information or images.
This is a stunning copy and for the tolkien collector.
