A rare first printing of the first Dutch edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, published by Het Spectrum in 1960 as Prisma pocket no. 529.


De Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, translated by Max Schuchart and published by Het Spectrum in 1960.

This important edition introduced Dutch readers to Tolkien's celebrated story of Bilbo Baggins. It features the instantly recognisable pink pictorial cover designed by Dutch illustrator and book designer Cees Kelfkens.

The book contains the Dutch versions of both of Tolkien's maps: Thror's Map and the map of Wilderland. Each map is printed across two pages, with the geographical names translated into Dutch.

The volume comprises a half-title, title page, copyright page, contents page, four pages of maps, 233 numbered pages of text and seven unnumbered pages promoting the Dutch edition of The Lord of the Rings. The inside front cover contains a short description of De Hobbit, while the inside rear cover carries a publisher's advertisement.

Condition:
A very good copy for its age. The distinctive pink front cover remains bright and has retained its original colour. The spine has no pronounced reading creases, and the binding is firm. There are no previous-owner inscriptions, underlining or annotations.

The text block shows the light, even age-toning and occasional spotting associated with the paper used for this edition. The covers have some edge wear, small corner creases and light handling marks. The rear cover displays somewhat more wear and creasing than the front. Please examine all photographs for a detailed impression of the condition.

An attractive and well-preserved example of this scarce and highly collectable first Dutch printing of De Hobbit.
