1st Book Club Edition, 1st UK 3rd impression, 1942 The Hobbit.
One of 3000 copies of the 1942, 1st Edition 3rd impression The Hobbit, printed for the Children's Book Club of the bookseller Foyles, in facsimile dustjacket published to celebrate the centenary of J.R.R. tolkien's birth on January 3, 1892.
Rebound in yellow (with respect to the original binding but not an exact replica), gilt-stamped cloth over boards, with a facsimile dust jacket (which Tolkien thought hideous) in orange and white, featuring a cartoon of a dandified hobbit smoking a pipe. Tolkien commented, "Surely the paper wasted on that hideous dust-cover could have been better used."
A scarce and desireable copy for the collector. The book is in good condition.
Overall, the book shows signs of handling and age, but any book which was produced under ‘war economy standards’ suffers from this.
Text block shows a lof of signs of handling and age.
Features the "Book Production War Economy Standards" title verso, 'This Edition published 1942 by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin'.
The dustjacket is a high quality reproduction of an original jacket.
Rebound in a similar colored binding but not an exact replica.
A beautiful copy of one of the rarest Hobbits. A beautiful copy of a very scarce book.
