A refined and atmospheric original painting by Ruth Lacon, inspired by The Silmarillion, depicting the moment Beren first beholds Lúthien Tinúviel dancing beneath the moonlit sky.
At the centre of the composition, Lúthien moves with grace and lightness, her pale garments flowing outward as if caught in a gentle, unseen breeze. The surrounding woodland glade is rendered in soft blues and greens, illuminated by moonlight and filled with delicate detail — birds, flowers, and quiet natural forms that enhance the sense of enchantment.
In the foreground, Beren stands partially concealed, watching in awe. His posture and placement within the composition convey both reverence and hesitation, capturing the emotional weight of this first encounter. The balance between the stillness of the observer and the movement of the dancer creates a subtle but powerful narrative tension.
Executed in gouache on paper, the painting has a smooth, luminous quality, with carefully controlled colour and fine detail. The intricate ink border frames the work elegantly, echoing the style of illuminated manuscripts and reinforcing the timeless, legendary nature of the scene.
Ruth Lacon has long been recognised for her Tolkien-inspired artwork. A member of The Tolkien Society since the 1980s, she has contributed both artwork and scholarly writing to Tolkien publications. With academic training in Zoology and Illustration, her work reflects a deep engagement with natural forms alongside a distinctive artistic interpretation of Tolkien’s legendarium. Her paintings have appeared in The Art of Ruth Lacon, and are admired by collectors for their refinement and narrative depth.
This scene recalls Tolkien’s evocative description of Lúthien as she dances in the woods of Doriath, a moment that marks the beginning of one of the greatest love stories in his mythology.
An elegant and finely executed original work capturing a moment of wonder, beauty, and destiny in Tolkien’s legendarium.
