A dramatic and atmospheric original painting by Ruth Lacon, inspired by The Lord of the Rings, depicting Frodo and Sam in the shadow of Mount Doom during the final stages of their perilous journey.

The composition is dominated by the towering presence of the volcano, rendered in deep reds, blacks, and fiery tones. Streams of lava and smoke erupt into the darkened sky, creating a powerful sense of scale and danger. Against this overwhelming backdrop, the small figures of Frodo and Sam descend together, emphasizing both their vulnerability and their courage.

Executed in gouache on paper, the painting has a rich, velvety depth of colour. The contrasts between glowing lava, dark rock, and pale smoke are handled with great control, giving the scene both intensity and clarity. The decorative border frames the composition, lending it a structured and almost iconic presence.

Ruth Lacon has long been recognised for her Tolkien-inspired artwork. A member of The Tolkien Society since the 1980s, she has contributed both artwork and scholarly writing to Tolkien publications. With academic training in Zoology and Illustration, her work reflects a deep engagement with natural forms alongside a distinctive artistic interpretation of Tolkien’s legendarium. Her paintings have appeared in The Art of Ruth Lacon, and are appreciated by collectors for their narrative strength and expressive style.

This scene recalls the final moments of the Quest of the Ring, where endurance, friendship, and sacrifice are brought to their ultimate test amid the fires of Mount Doom.

A powerful and evocative original work capturing one of the most dramatic moments in Tolkien’s legendarium.
