A lyrical and enchanting original painting by Ruth Lacon, inspired by one of the most beautiful and enduring moments in The Silmarillion: Beren’s first sight of Lúthien Tinúviel dancing in the forest of Neldoreth.
At the centre of the composition, Lúthien dances lightly among white flowers beneath a moonlit sky, her form flowing and ethereal, surrounded by movement and light. Her presence appears almost otherworldly, capturing the essence of Tolkien’s description of her as the fairest of all the Children of Ilúvatar.
In the foreground, Beren kneels in wonder, transfixed by the vision before him. His posture conveys both reverence and awe, marking the beginning of one of the greatest love stories in Tolkien’s legendarium. The surrounding woodland, rendered in soft greens and deep blues, frames the scene with a sense of quiet enchantment.
Executed in acrylic on paper and enhanced with an elegant ink border, the work has a refined, manuscript-like quality that complements the mythic nature of the subject. The delicate floral motifs and decorative framing echo the timeless and poetic character of the tale.
Ruth Lacon has long been recognised for her Tolkien-inspired artwork. A member of The Tolkien Society since the 1980s, she has contributed both artwork and scholarly writing to Tolkien publications. With academic training in Zoology and Illustration, her work reflects a deep understanding of natural forms alongside a distinctive artistic interpretation of Tolkien’s legendarium. Her paintings have appeared in The Art of Ruth Lacon, and are admired by collectors for their narrative sensitivity and originality.
This scene recalls Tolkien’s evocative description:
“And she danced then upon the green grass, and her feet were as light as the leaves of the trees…”
Beautifully rendered and rich in atmosphere, this painting captures the moment where fate, beauty, and legend first intertwine.
An elegant and deeply evocative original work depicting one of the most beloved scenes in Tolkien’s mythology.
