A bold and highly distinctive original work by Ruth Lacon, inspired by one of the most iconic scenes from The Hobbit: Bilbo’s tense and clever encounter with the dragon Smaug in the Lonely Mountain.

This “cave-painting” interpretation presents the scene in a stylised and almost primal visual language. Smaug lies coiled upon an immense hoard of gold, rendered in rich, textured layers of acrylic, while the surrounding cavern is formed through sculptural high-relief elements that give the work a remarkable physical depth. Bilbo appears as a small but significant figure at the edge of the composition, emphasizing the imbalance of power and the courage required to face such a creature.

The palette is dominated by warm golds, ochres, and deep earth tones, evoking both the glow of treasure and the oppressive heat of the dragon’s lair. The raised textures throughout the painting enhance the sense of material richness, particularly in the treasure hoard and cavern walls, making the piece as tactile as it is visually striking.

Ruth Lacon has long been recognised for her Tolkien-inspired artwork. A member of The Tolkien Society since the 1980s, she has contributed both scholarly writing and artwork to Tolkien publications over many years. With degrees in Zoology and Illustration, her work combines a deep sensitivity to natural forms with a unique artistic interpretation of Tolkien’s world. Her paintings have appeared in The Art of Ruth Lacon, and are highly regarded among collectors for their originality and expressive power.
