A wonderfully harmonious pair of original paintings by Ruth Lacon, inspired by two of the most memorable love stories in Tolkien’s legendarium: Beren and Lúthien, and Aragorn and Arwen.

Painted on commission in 2011, these two works were conceived as companions and are offered together as an inseparable pair. The owner has fittingly titled them Morning Star and Evening Star, an elegant pairing that beautifully reflects both their visual balance and their thematic resonance within Middle-earth.

One painting depicts Beren’s first sight of Lúthien, capturing that timeless moment of enchantment as she moves through the woodland glade, radiant and seemingly otherworldly. The companion work depicts Aragorn and Arwen, echoing that same sense of wonder, destiny, and quiet beauty in a later age of Tolkien’s mythology. Together, the two paintings create a poetic dialogue across the ages, linking two great unions of Men and Elves.

Each composition is richly bordered with flowers, birds, and stars, lending the works the appearance of illuminated panels and reinforcing their romantic, legendary atmosphere. The borders are finely integrated into the paintings themselves, with Ruth Lacon’s initials and date, LR 2011, painted into the lower corners.
