First U.S. Edition, First Printing (“First Printing H”), published November 24, 1967. This edition was typeset as for the George Allen & Unwin 1967 First Edition (U.K.). The true first American appearance of the work preceded this book publication in the December 1967 issue of Redbook magazine (published November 23, 1967).

Hardcover in original publisher’s green cloth, lettered and decorated to the front board with Tolkien’s device. Complete with the original dust jacket, illustrated by Pauline Baynes and priced $1.95 to the front flap (correct for the first printing). The jacket is now protected in a clear archival sleeve.

Illustrated throughout by Pauline Baynes. 64 pages.

Condition:
A very attractive example. The binding is clean and firm, with sharp decoration to the front board. Internally clean and well-preserved. A small, old pencil price notation (“15–”) is present to the front free endpaper (see photographs).

The dust jacket shows some general age-toning and light surface wear, as visible in the photographs, but remains complete and very presentable. Now housed in a protective archival cover.

An increasingly desirable Tolkien first American edition — especially in the true first printing with the original $1.95 jacket intact.
