The landmark illustrated study of Tolkien as an artist, in the first Houghton Mifflin edition and first printing, with 200 reproductions and the original price-unclipped dust jacket.
Published by Houghton Mifflin in Boston and New York in 1995, this is the first US edition and first printing of J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. The copyright page retains the complete number line ending in 1. The original dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the publisher's price of $40.00.
This large-format study follows Tolkien's visual imagination from childhood paintings and early drawings through his private art for his children and the maps, designs, calligraphy and finished illustrations associated with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and his wider legendarium. Its 208 pages contain 200 reproductions, many in colour and more than half first published here, with detailed commentary by two of the leading Tolkien bibliographers and scholars.
Condition: A very good copy in its original dust jacket. The jacket shows light surface rubbing and minor wear and creasing at the extremities, including the flap corners. The photographed endpapers and text pages are clean, with no ownership inscription visible in the photographs. The images below show the exact copy offered.
