J.R.R. Tolkien – The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien – Houghton Mifflin Hardcover

Selected and Edited by Humphrey Carpenter – With the Assistance of Christopher Tolkien

A superb hardcover edition of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, selected and edited by Humphrey Carpenter with the assistance of Christopher Tolkien. This volume presents Tolkien’s correspondence spanning his life and career, offering unparalleled insight into the creation of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and his wider mythological and scholarly thought.

This copy was published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, with copyright © 1981 by George Allen & Unwin (Publishers) Ltd. The book bears the ISBN 0-395-31555-7 and was printed in the United States of America. The number line D 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 confirms this as an early printing of the American edition (not a first printing, but close thereto).

The volume is bound in the publisher’s original black cloth boards, gilt-lettered on the spine, and is housed in the original pictorial dust jacket reproducing Tolkien’s handwritten letter dated February 4th, 1938. The jacket design is one of the most recognisable and evocative associated with Tolkien’s correspondence.

Condition

This copy is in Near Fine to Fine condition. The book itself is crisp, clean, and unread, with fresh pages and a tight binding. The dust jacket is exceptionally well preserved and remains protected in a clear archival sleeve. Overall, an unusually fresh example of a book now over four decades old.

An essential Tolkien reference work, presented here in outstanding condition — increasingly scarce in such well-preserved state.
