The Tolkien Family Album – John and Priscilla Tolkien – First U.S. Edition, First Printing, 1992

First U.S. edition and first printing of The Tolkien Family Album by John and Priscilla Tolkien, Houghton Mifflin 1992. A remarkably clean copy in the original photographic dust jacket, illustrated throughout with family photographs, letters and memorabilia.

Published for the Tolkien Centenary, this intimate photographic biography was assembled by Tolkien’s eldest son, John, and youngest child, Priscilla. Drawing on the family’s own albums, correspondence and keepsakes, it follows J.R.R. Tolkien from his childhood and courtship of Edith Bratt through the First World War, family life, his Oxford career and the creation of the books that made him famous.

The volume is richly illustrated throughout with candid family photographs, portraits, letters, drawings and other archival material, many reproduced from the Tolkien family collection. Its personal recollections and informal visual record offer a perspective on Tolkien’s private world that is unavailable in conventional literary biographies.
