The text incorporates the fully corrected 50th Anniversary setting, prepared in collaboration with Christopher Tolkien and reflecting Tolkien’s final revisions.

Bound in red boards and housed in a glossy black dust jacket featuring the gilt circular Ring device with the red Eye of Sauron at the centre, surrounded by Tengwar inscription. The jacket spine carries Tolkien’s monogram and title in gilt. The photographed endpapers are white.
