The Lord of the Rings – Ace Books Unauthorized Paperback Set (1965) – Association Copy Inscribed by Jack Gaughan to Dr. Donn Stephan.
A remarkable and historically significant association set of the infamous Ace Books “pirated” edition of The Lord of the Rings, inscribed by illustrator Jack Gaughan shortly before his death.
This is the complete three-volume Ace Books paperback set of The Lord of the Rings, published in 1965 in New York. These editions are widely known as the controversial “unauthorized” or “pirate” printings, issued by Ace Books before Tolkien’s works were properly protected under U.S. copyright law.
The set is of particular importance in Tolkien publishing history. Exploiting a loophole in copyright law, Ace Books issued the first mass-market paperback edition of Tolkien’s work in the United States, prompting a public dispute and ultimately leading to the authorized Ballantine editions. The episode significantly contributed to Tolkien’s rise in popularity across America.
The volumes feature the now-iconic and highly distinctive artwork of Jack Gaughan (1930–1985), whose bold and atmospheric interpretations — produced under intense time pressure — have since become inseparable from the legacy of these editions.
Association & Signature
Each volume is inscribed in ink by Jack Gaughan:
“For Dr. Donn Stephan – … Jack Gaughan – 5/85”
This inscription dates from May 1985, only weeks before Gaughan’s death in July of that same year, making this a particularly late and desirable example of his signature.
The recipient, Dr. Donn Stephan, was a noted Tolkien collector and is acknowledged in Tolkien bibliographical scholarship, including work associated with Douglas A. Anderson. The present set therefore represents a genuine association copy, linking the illustrator directly with an important figure in Tolkien collecting history.
Condition
The set is in very good collectible condition for these notoriously fragile paperbacks.
– All three volumes complete and matching (Ace A-4, A-5, A-6)
– General toning to paper as usual
– Moderate wear to covers and spine edges
– Some rubbing and handling marks
– Interior clean, with inscriptions as described
A well-preserved and honest example, significantly elevated by its association and signature.
Notes
– The first paperback appearance of The Lord of the Rings in the United States
– Issued without Tolkien’s authorization, leading to the famous Ace Books controversy
– Features Gaughan’s distinctive hand-lettered title pages and illustrations
– Increasingly recognized as a key piece of Tolkien publishing history
A rare opportunity to acquire a signed and historically important association set of one of the most famous and controversial Tolkien editions ever produced.
