The Lord of the Rings — 50th Anniversary Deluxe Boxed Set (4 vols, HarperCollins 2005) — Sealed

A highly sought-after four-volume hardback set issued to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the original publication of The Lord of the Rings (1954–2004).

The set comprises:
The Fellowship of the Ring (ISBN 0 00 720354 3)
The Two Towers (ISBN 0 00 720355 1)
The Return of the King (ISBN 0 00 720356 X)
The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull (ISBN 0 00 720308 X).

All four volumes are housed in the original black publisher’s slipcase bearing the Ring inscription and central Eye device in copper. The titles and author names are stamped in copper to the spines, and the boards carry designs based directly on artwork by J.R.R. Tolkien himself.

The volumes are colour-coded at the spine (cream, green, dark grey and pale grey), each displaying Tolkien’s monogram device at the head and HarperCollins imprint at the foot. The overall production is elegant, restrained and distinctly superior to later anniversary reissues.

This 2005 50th Anniversary configuration is widely regarded as the most desirable modern HarperCollins boxed presentation of The Lord of the Rings, combining the three parts in individual hardbacks with the essential Hammond & Scull Reader’s Companion — an indispensable scholarly guide to the text.

Still in the original publisher’s shrinkwrap, including the publisher/retailer barcode label to the outside of the wrap (visible in the photographs).

Condition:
Sealed / unopened in original shrinkwrap. The slipcase and volumes appear crisp and fresh beneath the wrap. There is light handling wear to the shrinkwrap itself (wrinkling/creasing and small splits/tears at edges/corners) consistent with storage, as visible in the photos. No further defects can be assessed without breaking the seal.

Examples of this edition in sealed condition are increasingly scarce on the secondary market.
