The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings – Ballantine Paperback Boxed Set (1986).

A complete four-volume Ballantine paperback set, housed in the original blue slipcase featuring artwork by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This is the classic 1986 Ballantine Books boxed set comprising The Hobbit together with the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings, issued in the publisher’s original blue slipcase. The slipcase features Tolkien’s own artwork and the well-known line “Twelve million readers can’t be wrong!”.

This set represents one of the more attractive later Ballantine issues, distinguished by its use of Tolkien’s illustrations rather than the earlier Barbara Remington designs. The harmonious colour scheme and compact format make it a particularly appealing and recognisable set among collectors.

Importantly, all four volumes are matching July 1986 Ballantine printings, as issued in this boxed set, and not later assembled copies.

Condition
The paperbacks are in very good condition, with clean interiors and solid bindings. The textblocks retain their characteristic yellow tint as issued. Minor signs of handling and age are present, but overall the books remain well-preserved.

The original slipcase shows rubbing and wear, particularly along edges and corners, with some loss of colour and minor surface wear, as visible in the photographs. It remains structurally sound and displays well.

Collector’s Note
This is one of the few Ballantine sets to include all four titles (The Hobbit and the complete Lord of the Rings) in a uniform boxed presentation. While not rare in absolute terms, complete and matching sets in their original slipcase have become increasingly difficult to source on the market.

A highly nostalgic and visually appealing Tolkien set, ideal for both collectors and readers alike.
