J.R.R. Tolkien – Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary – 2014 First Edition
UK HarperCollins Hardcover – Tolkien Dragon Cover Design – First Printing
The first UK hardcover edition of Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by HarperCollins Publishers in 2014 and edited by Christopher Tolkien. This volume presents Tolkien’s long-awaited prose translation of Beowulf, together with extensive commentary and the related text Sellic Spell.
The dust jacket features a striking dragon illustration by J.R.R. Tolkien himself, reproduced from the Bodleian Library (MS. Tolkien Drawings 87, fol. 39). This design was created specifically to complement the contemporary HarperCollins hardbacks of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
This is the true first printing of the UK edition, published by HarperCollins Publishers, London. The book was printed and bound in Great Britain by Clays Ltd, St Ives plc, as stated on the copyright page. ISBN: 978-0-00-759006-3.
Condition
The book is in Fine condition. The boards are clean and sharp, the binding is tight, and the pages are fresh and unmarked. The original dust jacket is also in Fine condition, with no tears, fading, or significant wear.
This edition is highly sought after as the first publication of Tolkien’s full Beowulf translation and commentary, and as one of the few modern Tolkien hardbacks to feature his own artwork on the jacket.
A fine first-printing example of Tolkien’s Beowulf, an essential volume for collectors of his scholarly and artistic work.
