Rare unopened example of the signed limited edition of The Silmarillion (1998), one of only 500 copies, signed by Christopher Tolkien and Ted Nasmith.



Published by HarperCollins, London, 2 September 1998. This is the true limited deluxe edition of The Silmarillion, issued in a strictly limited run of only 500 numbered copies, each signed by Christopher Tolkien and illustrator Ted Nasmith. Bound in rich burgundy quarter leather with cloth sides, the volume features gilt titling and the JRRT monogram, housed in a matching cloth slipcase with gilt device. The edition includes the celebrated full-colour illustrations by Ted Nasmith and was produced to a far higher specification than the later trade deluxe editions.

This particular copy remains completely factory sealed in the original publisher’s shrink-wrap. As a result, the limitation number and signatures are not visible, but by definition this is one of the 500 signed copies issued.

Condition report:
As-new. Still in original publisher’s shrink-wrap.
Minor shrink-wrap stress and small splits at extremities (visible at corners and spine ends), entirely typical for this issue after nearly three decades.
The slipcase remains structurally sharp, with no evidence of handling or wear beneath the wrap.
An exceptional preservation state, rarely encountered for this edition.

Summary:
The true first deluxe edition of The Silmarillion, limited to just 500 signed copies, represents one of the most important modern Tolkien collectible editions.
Unlike the later 2004 deluxe issue, this edition combines scarcity, signatures, and superior production quality.
Factory-sealed examples are virtually unobtainable, making this a highly desirable piece for advanced collectors.


A genuinely rare opportunity to acquire this landmark Tolkien edition in untouched, sealed condition.
