Early British paperback edition of The Hobbit, 1961, the first Puffin Books impression, with Pauline Baynes’ much-loved wraparound cover of Bilbo and the dwarves riding into the mountains.

Published by Puffin Books (Penguin Books Ltd.), Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1961. First Puffin edition, first impression, with the verso of the title page stating “First published in Puffin Books 1961” and no later printings indicated. Issued as Puffin Story Book no. PS 161, priced “3/6” on the front cover, and not for sale in the U.S.A. as noted on the rear panel.

This compact paperback introduced an entire generation of young readers to Bilbo Baggins in an inexpensive format, and has become one of the most attractive and sought-after early paperback printings of The Hobbit. The striking wraparound cover and spine design are by Pauline Baynes, showing the Company of Thorin riding along a mountain path beneath a stormy sky, an image now iconic in the history of Tolkien illustration.

Condition report:
Overall a clean and attractive example of this fragile early Puffin, graded about very good for the age, with some honest wear but no major defects and the text and maps all complete.

Covers:
The front cover retains strong, unfaded colour with Baynes’ artwork still sharp and clear. There is light rubbing along the edges and corners, a few small surface nicks, and minor creasing near the top edge. Spine shows vertical reading creases, some rubbing to the joints, and slight wear at head and tail, but remains complete with no significant loss and all lettering still legible. The rear cover is clean, with a light diagonal crease to the upper corner and a few small spots of rubbing and handling wear towards the lower edge; no large tears or chips.

Interior:
The text block is complete and still reasonably tight, with just a slight spine lean typical of read copies. Paper stock has tanned evenly throughout, as usual for Puffin paperbacks of this period, but the pages remain supple and perfectly readable. Occasional small spots of foxing and age-marking are present, more noticeable on the first and last few leaves, including the inside covers and the advertisement pages at the rear. Both maps – Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland – are present, well printed, and free from tears or major blemishes. No names, inscriptions or colouring-in to the illustrations noted.

Summary:
A very presentable first Puffin edition of The Hobbit, featuring Pauline Baynes’ atmospheric cover artwork and both maps intact. Early paperback printings of Tolkien’s classic children’s tale are becoming increasingly scarce in collectible condition; this is a solid and attractive example, ideal as a cornerstone piece in a collection of Tolkien paperbacks or cover art variants.
