The J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar 1974 is a highly collectible item that commemorates one of the most influential authors in modern fantasy literature. Published by Allen & Unwin, 1973, this calendar is a rare piece of Tolkien memorabilia, notable for its unique combination of personal photography and intricate artwork inspired by Tolkien’s legendarium.

The front cover of the calendar features a vibrant photograph of J.R.R. Tolkien sitting in a pastoral landscape, leaning against a tree, giving the item a personal and intimate touch. This image presents Tolkien in a casual, reflective pose, linking the calendar with the legacy of the beloved author.

The back cover reproduces Tolkien's heraldic devices, including those of Lúthien, Fëanor, Fingolfin and Eärendil, surrounding a Númenórean tile design. These are Tolkien's own designs, not illustrations of the characters themselves.

The twelve monthly illustrations include Hobbiton, Rivendell, Conversation with Smaug and Barad-dûr. The calendar also includes A Map of Middle-earth by Pauline Baynes. The cover photograph is by Billett Potter. ISBN 0045290016.

A good collectible copy with light creasing and handling marks to the covers, visible particularly along the upper edge of the rear cover. The interior pages remain clean and well-preserved. The two photographs show the front and rear covers; no mailing envelope is pictured.

Tolkien's own landscapes and heraldic designs make this early British calendar a distinctive record of his visual imagination.
