This is a genuine first impression of J.R.R. Tolkien’s first published Middle-earth book. The copyright page bears the statement “First published in 1937”, without mention of a later impression. Only 1,500 copies were printed for the book’s first appearance in September 1937, and surviving examples retaining their original dust jackets are among the most desirable books in modern fantasy literature.
The book remains in its original green cloth binding, with Tolkien’s mountain-and-moon design across the upper boards and his dragon motif on the lower board. The lettering and decorative design remain strong, and the cloth presents attractively, with only light signs of age and handling. The volume appears square and well preserved, with clean boards and a sound binding.
The book retains Tolkien’s illustrated map endpapers and the original black-and-white illustrations prepared for the first edition. The page edges show the natural toning expected of a book published in 1937. No ownership inscription or bookplate was reported by the consignor.
Original first-issue dust jacket
Of particular importance is the survival of the original Tolkien-designed dust jacket. The jacket is the correct first issue, with the original price of 7s. 6d. net printed on the front flap.
On the rear flap, the name of Lewis Carroll was originally printed incorrectly as “Dodgeson.” The superfluous letter “e” has been crossed through by hand, as performed by the publisher before issue. This distinctive hand-correction is one of the defining points of the original first-issue jacket.
The dust jacket is unrestored and remains notably rich in colour. It shows chipping and short tears around the spine ends and upper edges, together with creasing, rubbing and age-related marking. The verso displays toning and traces of earlier handling. These imperfections have been left untouched, preserving the jacket in its authentic state rather than disguising its history through restoration.
Despite the expected wear, the principal artwork remains vivid and complete in appearance. The blue, green and black design created by Tolkien is still exceptionally striking when placed around the original decorated cloth binding.
A cornerstone of Tolkien collecting
Published on 21 September 1937, The Hobbit introduced readers to Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Gollum and the world that would later become the setting for The Lord of the Rings. Its first printing sold out within months, beginning one of the most influential publishing histories of the twentieth century.
First impressions are scarce in any condition. Copies retaining an original, correctly priced, first-issue dust jacket are substantially rarer, particularly when the jacket remains unrestored and displays the hand-corrected “Dodgeson” issue point.
A highly desirable and visually impressive copy of the true first printing of The Hobbit, complete with its original unrestored first-issue dust jacket.
