The Lord of the Rings – Centenary Edition Signed by Alan Lee (1992)
Published by HarperCollins, London, 1992 – Number 146 of 250 copies
This exquisite three-volume set of The Lord of the Rings was specially commissioned to celebrate the centenary of J.R.R. Tolkien's birth (1892–1992). Strictly limited to 250 numbered copies, each is signed by the acclaimed illustrator Alan Lee, who would later become the visual architect of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy.
Bound in dark green leather and matching cloth, with Tolkien’s monogram stamped in gold on each front board, and presented in the original publisher’s slipcase. Each volume features a silk ribbon marker, gilt page edges, and a special limitation page hand-signed by Alan Lee.
The set includes all three parts of The Lord of the Rings — The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King — profusely illustrated with fifty original drawings by Alan Lee.
Condition: A very handsome set, internally clean and fresh. There are minor flaws worth noting: some rubbing to the slipcase corners and shelfwear. The top of the leather spine panels shows light scuffing and some flaking, particularly to The Two Towers volume — see photographs for detail. Otherwise, the books present beautifully and remain structurally sound and highly collectible.
An exceptional production — one of the rarest Alan Lee signed Tolkien editions — and a cornerstone for serious collectors.
