J.R.R. Tolkien – The Hobbit, Deluxe Illustrated Edition (2013)
Published by HarperCollins, London, 2013 – Illustrated by Jemima Catlin
This deluxe slipcased edition of *The Hobbit* was published in 2013 and features over 150 new colour illustrations by Jemima Catlin. It was the first fully illustrated edition of the book in over 15 years and offers a whimsical, detailed visual retelling of Tolkien’s classic.
Bound in red cloth with an elaborate gold foil wraparound design of Smaug, the book includes gilt edges, ribbon marker, and is housed in a matching red and gold slipcase. The slipcase remains strong and vibrant, with only minor shelfwear to edges and corners.
The book itself is clean and unread internally, with crisp white pages and tight binding. However, the cloth spine is visibly **sun-faded** compared to the boards and slipcase, which is a known issue with this edition. Gilt titling and design remain unaffected.
Despite the spine fade, this is a highly attractive and collectible copy of a now-scarce deluxe edition, perfect for readers and collectors alike.
