J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1979. The copyright page identifies this as the second impression of the De Luxe edition first issued in 1976.

Bound in black imitation leather with Tolkien’s dragon design in gilt, silver and red on the front board, and gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. With patterned endpapers, Tolkien’s illustrations, colour plates, and the maps of Thror and Wilderland printed across paired pages.

Complete with the original black publisher’s box with a separate lid and printed title label.

Condition

The book is in very good condition, with rubbing and surface marks to the covers, including a pale scuff on the rear board and handling marks on the front. The gilt and coloured decoration remain bright. The binding is tight and the interior pages are clean and well preserved.

The publisher’s box is more worn, with rubbing and exposed card at the edges and corners, surface scuffs, and splits at the corners of the lid. The title label remains present.
