Quarter Leather Bound with Leatherette Slipcase

This is a magnificent copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, published by HarperCollins in 2001. This volume represents the third impression of the Deluxe India Paper Edition first released in 1997. This luxurious edition is printed on India paper, reducing the thickness of the book to approximately 1 inch, allowing for a compact yet comprehensive version of Tolkien’s epic trilogy.

The book is quarter-bound in black leather with gilt titles, author’s name, publisher, and Tolkien’s distinctive monogram elegantly displayed on the spine. The front board features a large gilt-stamped Tolkien monogram, adding a touch of sophistication to this beautiful volume.

The volume includes the map “A Part of The Shire” on page 30, and the 1980 version of “The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age” along with “The Map of Gondor, Rohan, and Mordor” displayed on the endpapers.

This third impression is housed in the original publisher’s black leatherette slipcase, adorned with the gilt-stamped monogram design, perfectly matching the book’s cover. The first and second impressions were issued in a cloth-covered slipcase, but the third and fourth impressions, like this one, feature the more elegant leatherette slipcase.

Only 2,037 copies of this third impression were produced, making it a relatively rare and valuable edition. Unlike the first impression, which was marketed as a limited edition of 1,000 copies, this third impression doesn’t carry that specific claim but is still highly sought after by collectors.

This edition aligns in size and design with the other HarperCollins Limited Editions of The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and The History of Middle Earth series, making it a cohesive addition to any serious Tolkien collection.

The book is in Near Fine condition, with the only minor flaw being a slight rubbing to the gilt-stamped monogram on the cover. The leatherette slipcase is also in Near Fine condition with minimal wear. The gilded edges are immaculate, with no markings or blemishes, making this an exceptional piece for collectors.

This is an exquisite example of the Deluxe India Paper Edition, perfect for fans of Tolkien’s work or collectors seeking to enhance their collection with a truly special edition.
