De Hobbit – Dutch Sixth Printing, 1969.

An early sixth printing of the Dutch translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, published by Het Spectrum as Prisma-Boeken no. 529.

De Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, translated by Max Schuchart and published by Het Spectrum in 1969.

This attractive early Dutch printing retains the famous pink pictorial cover created by Dutch illustrator and book designer Cees Kelfkens. His colourful and highly distinctive depiction of Tolkien's characters is now closely associated with the collectable early Prisma editions of De Hobbit.

Condition:
A generally well-preserved used copy with a bright and attractive front cover. The book shows normal age-toning to the paper, while the photographed interior pages appear clean and the binding appears sound.

The complete exterior of the book was covered at a later date with transparent self-adhesive plastic film. The film extends around the edges and onto the inside of the covers. Its seams, overlaps, surface reflections and some unevenness are visible. This plastification is not original to the publication and cannot be removed safely without risking damage to the printed covers.

The plastic film has helped preserve the strong colours of the Kelfkens artwork, but its presence reduces the book's value as an unaltered collectable copy. The spine also shows rubbing, small surface marks and general shelf wear beneath or along the protective film. Please examine all photographs carefully for a complete impression of its condition.

Despite the later plastification, this remains an appealing and presentable early Dutch printing of De Hobbit, retaining its iconic Cees Kelfkens cover and clean-looking interior.

Offered at 125 EUR.
