The Hobbit
J.R.R. Tolkien
Deluxe Edition, 1st Impression – 1976
George Allen & Unwin, London
This is the first impression of the Deluxe Edition of The Hobbit, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1976. The book is bound in a black buckram cloth with a striking design of Smaug the dragon, designed by J.R.R. Tolkien himself, embossed in gilt, red, and silver on the front cover. The spine features gilt lettering with decorative rules.
The book is housed in its original black slipcase, which includes a label printed with the title and author in red, giving the edition a timeless, elegant appearance. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear and slight soiling on the label, consistent with age, but remains structurally intact.
This edition includes Tolkien’s illustrations, with Thror's Map and The Map of Wilderland printed on the endpapers. Additionally, there are five full-color illustrations by Tolkien, along with eight of his original black-and-white illustrations that have been colored by H.E. Riddett.
Inside, the text block is in near-fine condition with no noticeable foxing or toning. The pages are clean and bright, with a tight binding, showing no signs of significant wear. Overall, this copy presents very well, and remains an excellent collector’s piece for Tolkien enthusiasts.
This edition was issued in four impressions under the George Allen & Unwin imprint, starting with this first impression in 1976. The book continues to be highly sought after by Tolkien collectors.
