This is the first edition of Essays and Studies Vol. XIV (1929), published by Clarendon Press, Oxford, and containing J.R.R. Tolkien’s essay "Ancrene Wisse and Hali Meiðhad," which appears on pages 104-126. In this essay, Tolkien presents the argument that the languages of the original versions of the Middle English texts Ancrene Wisse and Hali Meiðhad are fundamentally the same, coining the term ‘language (AB)’ for this linguistic analysis.

The book is bound in the original green cloth, with gilt lettering on the spine. The binding remains tight, with only minor wear along the edges and corners, and light rubbing at the spine. Unfortunately, this copy is missing its original dust jacket. The interior pages are clean and well-preserved, with minimal signs of foxing. An ownership signature on the front endpaper reads "Oliver Irene Hooper," adding a layer of provenance to this copy.

Though this copy lacks its dustwrapper, it remains a highly collectible item, especially for scholars and enthusiasts of Tolkien’s academic work in medieval studies. The book is a key reference for those studying Middle English and represents an important contribution to Tolkien’s scholarly legacy.

A desirable volume for any serious Tolkien collector, this first edition showcases Tolkien’s critical work outside of his more widely known fiction.
