Offered here is a matched three-volume first edition set of The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, each a true UK first impression published by George Allen & Unwin between 1954 and 1955. The books retain their original red cloth bindings and are complete with the iconic “Eye” dust jackets designed by Tolkien himself.
The dust jackets show the expected signs of age and careful handling. There is overall toning, edge wear, and some rubbing to extremities. The Two Towers jacket is noticeably darker in tone than the other two volumes and shows protective covering/tape at the upper front, as visible in the photographs. The other jackets are likewise protected in clear covers. All three remain complete and visually cohesive as a set, with the striking Eye motif presenting strongly both on the shelf and within the custom case.
The books themselves remain structurally sound. The red top stains are present, with The Two Towers showing more pronounced mottling to the stain, clearly visible in the photographs. The page blocks show age-related spotting and foxing, most noticeably along the fore-edge of one volume, while the others are comparatively cleaner. The bindings are firm, and the set has clearly been preserved together over time.
The three volumes are housed in a custom-made red slipcase with gilt decoration to the front panel, featuring the Eye motif encircled by Tengwar lettering, with additional Tengwar script above and below. The interior is lined in black and includes a ribbon pull for ease of removal. The case provides both protection and an elegant presentation appropriate to a work of this importance.
True UK first-impression sets in original dust jackets have become increasingly difficult to assemble. Presented here as a complete, uniform trio and enhanced by a bespoke slipcase, this set represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire one of the defining works of twentieth-century literature in its original form.
A nice first edition set, the dream for every serious Tolkien collector.
