The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien – Prisma-Boeken, 1960 – First Dutch Edition, First Printing
The very first Dutch pocket edition of The Hobbit, translated by Max Schuchart – a scarce and desirable 1960 true first printing.
Offered here is an authentic example of the earliest Dutch pocket edition of
The Hobbit,
published in 1960 by Het Spectrum / Prisma-Boeken. This is the genuine
first printing,
identifiable by the 1960 copyright page and the characteristic Prisma cover design.
Condition:
A clean and well-preserved example for this fragile edition. The cover shows the usual creasing and edge wear,
but the colours remain unusually bright for a 1960 Prisma. The spine shows reading creases.
The text block displays uniform age-toning, as is typical for the thin wartime-style paper used in this issue.
The map leaf is
present but detached. All other pages are firmly bound and complete.
There is an early owner inscription dated 1961 on the half-title, adding to its period charm.
Features:
- True first Dutch printing (1960)
- Classic translation by Max Schuchart
- Map of Wilderland present (detached)
- Bright front cover – better than typically seen
- A cornerstone piece in the Dutch Tolkien publication history
Despite some expected wear and the detached map leaf, this remains a highly collectible and
increasingly scarce first printing, especially with such a vivid cover. A solid and attractive example
for collectors wishing to complete the Dutch publication sequence.
