Published by Prisma-Boeken (Het Spectrum), Utrecht/Antwerpen, 1973. This is the familiar and much-loved Dutch paperback edition of The Hobbit, translated by Max Schuchart and wrapped in Cees Kelfkens’ unmistakable modernist cover design — a striking combination of bold colours and stylised dwarves that has become a favourite among collectors of international Tolkien translations.

The copyright page confirms this as the 10th printing, issued in 1973, still carrying the original layout, typography and maps that define this long-running Prisma series. The book includes both Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland, printed across two facing pages in clear black line-work.

Condition report:
This is a complete and sound copy showing the usual signs of handling expected in Prisma paperbacks. The front cover retains strong colour with the pink panel still vivid, though there is rubbing along the outer edges and a little wear at the corners. The spine shows several vertical reading creases and some chipping at the head and tail, but remains fully attached. The back panel is clean overall, with modest rubbing and light surface wear only.

Inside, the binding is firm with no loose gatherings. The paper has tanned evenly throughout, characteristic of this edition, but remains supple and fully readable. Both maps are present, sharp and without tears. The endpapers show the common scattered foxing, but the text itself is clean, free from markings, and well-preserved for a forty-plus-year-old pocket edition. No names or inscriptions observed, making this an unobtrusive copy for reading or collecting.
