The Silmarillion – Deluxe Limited Edition (1982) in Full Crimson Goatskin – Copy No. 260 of 1000
A magnificent example of the celebrated 1982 deluxe Silmarillion, produced in a limitation of only 1000 copies and bound in full crimson goatskin.
Published by George Allen & Unwin in 1982, this limited edition of The Silmarillion is widely regarded as one of the finest posthumous Tolkien luxury editions. Each copy was bound by hand in full red goatskin, with raised bands, gilt lettering, and the JRRT monogram stamped to the front board. Only one thousand numbered copies were issued; this is No. 260.
The binding on this copy is exceptionally well preserved, displaying the rich, even crimson tone characteristic of the best examples. The leather shows almost no signs of handling, the gilt is bright and unrubbed, and the raised bands are clean and sharp. The inner boards and endpapers are immaculate, and the text block is crisp and clean throughout.
The original large folding map of Beleriand is present and perfectly inserted at the rear. The book is housed in its original red cloth slipcase, which remains in excellent condition with no fading, splits, or structural wear—an increasingly rare survival.
An outstanding copy of one of the most desirable deluxe Tolkien editions, produced to a standard seldom equalled in later years and now very seldom offered in such condition.
