Autograph letter signed (“JRR Tolkien”), to Mr Potts, Headington, Oxford, 15 August 1964

An intriguing autograph letter signed by J.R.R. Tolkien, responding to Mr. Potts, dated 15 August 1964, from Headington, Oxford.

This letter provides a fascinating glimpse into Tolkien’s personality and his guarded nature when it came to his literary works.

The letter is one page, 8vo (176 x 135mm), written on cream-coloured Sandfield Road headed notepaper. It bears one central fold, presumably to fit an envelope, with some creases and light spotting. In this letter, Tolkien responds to a questionnaire sent by Mr. Richard Potts with the following words:

“Dear Mr Potts,

I think you are asking too much of a busy man. Most of your questions are in any case unanswerable, by me, and some impertinent. You may put me down as an odd character, for personally I do not believe that any valuable truths or insights are discoverable by such questionnaires. Yours sincerely, JRR Tolkien.”

Richard Potts had sent Tolkien a questionnaire while working on his dissertation on children’s literature, hoping for insights into Tolkien’s craft. However, the questions seemed to strike a nerve, prompting Tolkien’s curt response. Potts later recalled his surprise at the letter, having asked about Tolkien’s writing process and the source of his inspiration. Despite the rebuke, Potts went on to become a successful children’s author himself.

This letter not only reveals Tolkien’s character but also his protective stance over his work, especially when it was scrutinized or criticized. Despite receiving numerous fan letters, Tolkien remained steadfast in his beliefs about his writing. His firm response to Potts exemplifies his dedication to his craft and his reluctance to entertain what he deemed unproductive inquiries.

The letter is in near fine condition with some creases and light spotting, consistent with age. There are no significant tears or marks that detract from the overall presentation of this remarkable piece.

A valuable addition to any Tolkien collection, this letter offers a rare and personal insight into the mind of one of the greatest authors of the 20th century.
