J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘De Hobbit,’ Dutch Paperback, First Printing
Published by Prisma Boeken, First Edition (1960), Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum.
Dutch Edition of De Hobbit of daarheen en weer terug translated by Max Schuchart, Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum.
This rare first printing of De Hobbit in Dutch presents J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved story in a unique translation by Max Schuchart. This edition is notable for its vibrant cover, designed by Cees Kelfkens, featuring whimsical illustrations of dwarves and Bilbo on a striking pink background. Part of Prisma’s popular series, this edition brings together Tolkien’s adventure with Dutch cultural flair.
The cover shows some wear, appropriate to its age, with slight rubbing along the edges and a hint of discoloration near the spine. The front design, however, remains vivid and eye-catching.
There are markings on the inside cover, where a previous owner’s price notation and some crossed-out text are visible, as seen in the photos. This adds to the book’s history and character.
The spine shows some creasing and gentle signs of wear but remains intact, preserving the book’s structural integrity.
The pages exhibit typical yellowing consistent with vintage paperbacks, though they are otherwise clean and free from tears or major stains. Tolkien’s maps of Thror’s Map and Wilderland are included and retain the charm of Tolkien’s original calligraphy translated into Dutch.
This edition includes the original maps created by Tolkien, Thrors kaart (Thror’s Map) and Wilderland, translated into Dutch while maintaining Tolkien’s unique calligraphic style.
At the back, several unnumbered pages list other titles available in the Prisma-Boeken series, giving a nostalgic glimpse into the Dutch literary offerings of the period.
This 1960 first printing is a rare and appealing collectible, capturing both the essence of Tolkien’s storytelling and the unique interpretation provided by Dutch translators and designers. Its first-edition status and condition make it a highly desirable find for enthusiasts of Tolkien’s international editions.
Being a first Dutch printing of De Hobbit adds significant value to this edition, especially in well-preserved condition.
