The Lord of the Rings (Early Impressions Rebound in 3 Volumes – Full Leather Binding)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen & Unwin, London, 1956–1958.
A unique rebinding of early UK impressions of The Lord of the Rings, comprising the following: Fifth Impression (1956), Fifth Impression (1957), and Fourth Impression (1958). Each volume has been finely rebound in full dark maroon leather with Tolkien’s Ring and Eye emblem stamped in gilt on the front boards.
The volumes are titled uniformly on the spine as Part One, Part Two, and Part Three, under the main title The Fellowship of the Ring—a rebinding decision, not reflective of the book’s actual structure. One volume has top edge gilt; the other two have all edges gilt. Interiors are clean, with a neat 1959 ownership inscription in each.
The map is missing from Part One. Part Two retains its map but with a long tear not affecting the printed image. Part Three map appears intact.
Some minor marks to leather covers consistent with age. A slightly unconventional but compelling collector’s set—offering early printings in a fine custom leather format.
A rare opportunity to acquire early UK impressions of Tolkien’s epic in a finely bound three-volume presentation.
