Dear Mr. Festinger,
Thank you for your letter of 2nd October.
It seems that you are a lover of Hobbitry and Hobbit lore, and I am sorry that I cannot at present promise you the further adventures of Frodo, Gandalf, Bilbo or Gollum.
But every story has to end somewhere.
2. Typed Letter Signed from Tolkien to Kurt Festinger, 21st August 1964
Tolkien responds to a fan letter, pointing out where the runes in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are translated in those books, and what his initials stand for.
76 Sandfield Road,
Headington,
Oxford.
21st August 1964.
Dear Kurt Festinger,
Thank you very much for your letter. Here are the answers to your questions:
The runes on Thror’s Map in The Hobbit are translated in Ch. 1 and 3, and mean “Five feet high the door and three may walk abreast” and “Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the keyhole”. The writing on the title pages of the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings consists simply of the title, author, publisher, etc.
My initials stand for John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. I am afraid I have no photograph of myself I can send you.
Both letters in original envelopes and signed J.R.R. Tolkien in black ink.
Two lovely fanmail responses by Tolkien, extremely desirable for any Tolkien collector.
Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
