This set includes: The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The Hobbit is the 56th printing, October 1975, Ballantine paperback.
The Fellowship of the Ring is the 52nd printing, April 1975, Ballantine paperback.
The Two Towers is the 48th printing, April 1975, Ballantine paperback.
The Return of the King is the 47th printing, April 1975, Ballantine paperback.

ISBN's 0-345-27257-9, 0-345-27258-7, 0-345-27259-5 and 0-345-27260-9.
The set holds ISBN 034524785X (not noted on the slipcase). Issued in a gold foil slipcase with design based on artwork by J.R.R. Tolkien. Covers also feature art by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The slipcase Heraldic symbols include the ones designed to represent Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, Earendil, Luthien Tinuviel, Fingolfin, Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel and Finwe.

This is also the first set to feature the illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the covers of the book and slipcase, rather then the Barbara Remington designs as found on previous issues.

These paperback books are in good and read condition, with some tanning to the covers. Rubbing and stains to the spines. The Hobbit is read the most and has some stains on the cover.
The slipcase has rubs, mainly to the corners. The top left corner has a bump. Overal wear on the gold foil and some rubbing to the bottom of the slipcase.

Hammond and Anderson's, A Descriptive Bibliography notes that "after the 40th (March 1973) and no later than the forty-second (September 1973)", the Hobbit was sold in sets with the Lord of the Rings, housed "in a slipcase, gold (or blue, or red) printed paper over boards, featuring Heraldic devices by Tolkien." This design was used until 1983, when the covers were changed again. So this set is from that period.
