Exclusive Photographic Print: J. R. R. Tolkien gazing into the horizon outdoors
Stunning Color Portrait by Renowned Photographer Pamela Chandler, 1966
In a rare 1961 session, commissioned by Allen & Unwin, Pamela Chandler was tasked with capturing the elusive J. R. R. Tolkien on film. Her work resonated so deeply with Tolkien that she became his preferred photographer. As their bond grew, Tolkien invited her in 1966 for a personal session, capturing intimate moments in his garden with his wife Edith and inside his study. Among these prized photos is one showcasing his hand-drawn map of Middle Earth and his weekly diary.
This original colour photograph, taken and printed by Pamela Chandler herself, shows Tolkien looking into the distance outdoors. The photograph measures 18 x 24 cm, with an additional white border, on Kodak Professional Endura photographic paper.
Reverse and condition
The reverse bears a Pamela Chandler Photography Collection label with copyright details naming Diana Willson and the handwritten reference C/28. The paper is visibly curled. The accompanying photographs show the front, full reverse, collection label and a close-up of the portrait.
