Exclusive Photographic Print: J. R. R. Tolkien in His Library

Colour portrait by Pamela Chandler — 1966 photographic session

In a rare 1961 session, commissioned by Allen & Unwin, Pamela Chandler was tasked with capturing the elusive J. R. R. Tolkien on film. Her work resonated so deeply with Tolkien that she became his preferred photographer. As their bond grew, Tolkien invited her in 1966 for a personal session, capturing intimate moments in his garden with his wife Edith and inside his study. Among these prized photos is one showcasing his hand-drawn map of Middle Earth and his weekly diary.

This colour portrait shows Tolkien smiling in front of his bookshelves, holding a Japanese edition of The Hobbit. The image measures 18 x 24 cm, with a surrounding white border.

This is an original photograph taken and printed by Pamela Chandler herself, on Kodak Professional Endura paper. The reverse is stamped “Photographed by Pamela Chandler” and “Copyright Diana Willson”, with a notice requiring permission for reproduction or sale.

Condition: The photographs show the front, reverse and copyright stamp of this print. The white border and corners are visible, with slight undulation to the paper.
