Original Transparency for the Deluxe Lord of the Rings Slipcase

Pauline Baynes artwork for the Allen & Unwin deluxe edition, 1963–1964.

Original tungsten Kodak Safety Film colour transparency, approximately 14 × 11 inches, preserved between two sheets of acetate with a “Vibicolor” label at the top. A Three-Point Reflection Guide appears to the left of the image and a grey-scale guide to the right. Fine condition. Bibliographical reference: Hammond & Anderson, p. 98.

An ultra-large-format transparency taken directly from Pauline Baynes’s original artwork, including the pencilled registration marks. It is catalogued as one of likely two, possibly three, transparencies used for the slipcase of the 1963–1964 deluxe Lord of the Rings. The image represents one half of the slipcase triptych, showing Mount Doom beside part of the central Two Towers panel.

Arching trees frame the scene, with Baynes’s imaginative creatures around the borders. The photographs show the transparency from both sides and in a brighter, detailed view.

The film has previously been identified from its notches as Kodak Ektachrome 64T. Its vivid colour and fine detail make this an interesting survival from the production of the slipcase. Any reproduction would require the copyright holder’s permission.

A striking production transparency preserving Pauline Baynes’s slipcase artwork, colour guides and registration marks.
