The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1957.

Original Binding, Near Fine / Near Fine Original Dust Jacket.

A superb copy of an early printing of The Hobbit.
The 1957, 9th overall printing, or the 5th printing of the 2nd Edition (1957).

A Near Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket, with light wear at the jacket edges and slight toning to the flaps.

The dustjacket shows beautifully, with almost no loss at the tips of the folds and edges.
The stated 9th impression dustjacket is original to the book, and has protected it well over the years.
This jacket is not price clipped and shows "12s 6d. net", to the front flap.
The book is stated 9th impression on title verso, one of 2,986 copies bound for Allen & Unwin.

The text is generally clean and bright, with light age-toning and a few small spots to the fore-edge. Bound in the publisher’s original green Linson boards, stamped in dark blue, with only light wear.

Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien.
The red-and-black endpaper maps remain clear and bright. Pencil notes appear at the top of the front map, including a note identifying the ninth impression and 1957.

A beautiful copy, scarce in original dustjacket in absolute Near Fine condition.

A bright 1957 ninth-impression Hobbit in its matching unclipped jacket, with Tolkien’s colour frontispiece and endpaper maps.
