The Lord of the Rings, Book Club Associates, 1971 One-Volume Hardback Edition in Dustjacket.
Scarce 1971 Book Club Associates one-volume hardback of The Lord of the Rings, in the Pauline Baynes illustrated dustjacket.
This is the 1971 Book Club Associates one-volume edition of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, issued in London by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin.
The copyright page notes that the work was first published in three volumes in 1954–55, that the 2nd Edition was published in 1966, and that this edition was published by Book Club Associates in 1971. The text therefore follows the revised Second Edition of the novel.
The book contains the complete text of the trilogy:
Part I: The Fellowship of the Ring
Part II: The Two Towers
Part III: The Return of the King
together with the usual maps of Middle-earth, including the large map printed opposite the Ring verse.
Bound in the original brown cloth boards, lettered in gilt to the spine with the BCA device in gilt at the foot. The cloth is generally clean, with light rubbing and a few small marks, and with minor bumping to the corners and spine ends. The spine shows slight creasing, though the gilt titling remains bright. The text block is toned with age, but the pages are clean and free of writing, inscriptions or underlining.
The book is complete in the original Pauline Baynes dustjacket, repeating the familiar wraparound illustration of Middle-earth with “TOLKIEN” to the lower panel and spine. The jacket shows overall wear, rubbing to the edges and corners, and short tears to the spine ends. There is notable loss and tearing along the top edge of the rear panel, exposing the brown cloth beneath, as shown in the photographs. The spine panel is slightly darkened but all lettering remains clear. The jacket is now protected in a removable archival cover.
Despite the flaws to the dustjacket, this remains a desirable copy of a scarce early one-volume hardback of The Lord of the Rings. The 1971 BCA edition is far less common than the contemporary paperbacks, and examples retaining the original Baynes jacket are increasingly difficult to find.
An attractive and solid copy for the Tolkien collector, combining the charm of the Pauline Baynes artwork with the convenience of the complete trilogy in a single volume.
